MySpace can actually bring great benefits to a Lot of People
By Jenny 05:39 pm EDT, Fri May 16, 2008
It gives rock bands the ability to find fans and get their music heard. Some people that have lost touch are able to reunite with old acquaintances and friends. But did you know that MySpace can help in the treatment of serious diseases. Research can use the online social network to find volunteers for clinical research.

There are associations likePatientsLikeMe that reach out to people who have degenerative neurological disease or ALS and shares different information about treatment, and symptoms. PatientsLikeMe use MySpace to build communities of people with similar conditions, and has also started projects in which they analize different clinical information from different patients to see if anything correlates.

Because of sites like PatientsLikeMe other associations have started similar sites, lie 23andMe which is a site that is dedicated to people with Parkinson’s disease.

  MySpace Catching the Criminals
By Tom 01:52 am EDT, Fri May 16, 2008
MySpace is the largest social networking site on the internet. There are millions of users, and many of them are under aged teens. As a part of their GET TOUGH ON CRIME campaing, the site has found and eliminated more than 29,000 registered sex offenders who have profiles on the site.

In the beginning MySpace was withholding the number of registered sex offenders on the site, citing federal privacy laws, but when the states all filed formal legal requests, MySpace began to share the information. A few months ago they had only found 7,000 profiles of sex offenders, but with more time and better ways of monitoring the site they have managed to find much more than that this time.

MySpace Actually Helps Kids More than it Hurts Them
By Jenny 01:44 am EDT, Fri May 16, 2008
Many parents have NO IDEA about what is going on with MySpace, while other parents are creating their own MySpace page to keep up wih their kids. All of the derogatory information that some of the media puts out about MySpace can make things even more confusing for parents.

The truth is that most children dont have problems on MySpace, in fact, they even find int beneficial and find that they become more outgoing and find other interests because of social networking. MySpace can even help teens get through the awkwardness of being a teen.

MySpace can help make shy kids more sociable, and help their self esteem. Being last in the crowd can make a teen feel like an alien, and knowing that MySpace is there, and that they are just like any other normal teen there, can encourage kids, give them confidence, and make their real life world a little easier to handle.

Parents should just be aware of what could happen, and should talk to their teens about being safe while on MySpace, and they should take the time to learn a little bit about the site themselves.

By Felix 01:30 am EDT, Fri May 16, 2008
MySpace TV is developing a short-form original series starring "Beverly Hills 90210" alumnus Ian Ziering. The series is based on "Man vs. Monday," a comedic short film Ziering directed, produced and starred in that made the festival circuit in 2006. Ziering, who participated in a recent season of "Dancing With the Stars," will co-produce with NuMedia Studios through his own iMan Prods. "In the entertainment industry there remains one constant: change," Ziering said. "I believe the...More

Indiana Supreme Court Overules Juvenile Sentence
By Jenny 11:49 pm EDT, Wed May 14, 2008
The Indiana Supreme Court has overruled a judge who gave a JR. High School student probation, for criticizing her school director over certain school rules about body piercings. The court of appeals ordered that the probation be set aside because it violated her free speech rights. The Supreme court overruled the court and says that the judgement fails to prove that the girls MySpace post was harassment.

In 2006 the principal of the school found a myspace page that was supposedly created by him. He didn’t create this page, and on it he found derogatory postings which also stated that he could no longer control the girl, and she would wear her piercings.

The school filed a petitieon alleging that the girls acts were harassment, identity theft, but because the offender was a juvenile, the court dropped most of the accusations.

The Supreme Court, however, disagreed with that rationale and instead overruled the court Tuesday because it found it had failed to prove that the girl's post constituted harassment under Indiana law.

Aster Data Systems-New Technology for MySpace
By Jenny 11:47 pm EDT, Wed May 14, 2008
Aster Data Systems, a relatively new company with a great new product, an analytics database that scales to hundreds of microprocessors just acquired their most important client, MySpace.

Apparently MySpace plans on using this new technology to analyze users needs, the way they use the sie and advertising opportunities.

This is a lot for a new data analysis company, but if Aster Data Systems can aid MySpace in these areas, it will be an impressive feat. Aster is owned by three partners out of Stanford University. The CEO and co founder Mayank Bawa developed algorithms to query cto systems. The other co founder George Candea has worked with Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft.

These are some real experts, and that is what MySpace needs for this venture. How Aster Data Systems is going to get all of this done, no one really knows. The company has a website which gives some insight as to its new technology, but none of the details.

  MySpace Leader In Data Availability
By Jenny 11:45 pm EDT, Wed May 14, 2008
MySpace may be the first to lead the data availabilitiy between different applications. We now know that MySpace will be sharing data with other applications like eBay, Twitter, Yahoo, eBay, but one of the biggies is noted for its absence. Google. Both Google and MySpace have been working on data portability. MySpace with the OpenSocial API and Google with the OpenSocial Foundation, but for some reason MySpace has attained openness but without the biggest search engine available.

When The Senior Vice President of Technology Jim Benedetto was confronted with the issue, he wouldn’t say if Google had been invited to participate or not. He did mention that Data availability is so open that anybody can join without even having to get into contact with MySpace. He did say that he thought that the OpenSocial network was going to be used by many including google. On the other hand when Google was asked the same question, they did not respond as to whether or not they would join MySpaces OpenSocial API.

Analyst for eWeek said that they believe that we only need to wait a little bit, until Goog, and most web sites support data portability from MySpace and other social networks. Users will see some sort of control panel on which they can decide which data goes on what website. So, when users click a button on MySpace they will be take to a page that will tell them what data they can share with Twitter.

Eventually MySpace will let users share data with one site and other information with another site, by simply checking a few boxes. Users will also be able to refuse to share any data with any other website.

MySpace Research and Workshop Helps Advertisers
By Felix 03:45 pm EDT, Tue May 13, 2008
Social networks are redefining what the internet is about and what the online experience is about. Many thought they were just a fad, but they are quickly becoming the force of web 2.0. They are unique in that they offer both and audience and the environment for marketing communications. Although the benefits to users is becoming very understood the value of these social networking sites to advertisers is still not understandable. Myspace has recently commissioned an new study called MySpace08 to figure out how advertisers can benefit from social networking sites.

The workshop will be shown at Cannes Lions 2008, and should be viewed by delegates for advertising agencies and especially those who are looking to the future. This research shows how traditional marketing wont work here, and how new marketing tools need to be incorporated to social networks. The right combination of targeted marketing, viral marketing can be great only it all has to be done in a different way.

This workshop will also show how the web is becoming more of a shared environment. As an example the new developer platform is one of the most open communities and lets applications be created for all social networks.

Usage tells Advertisers that MySpace is the Way to Go
By Jenny 03:43 pm EDT, Tue May 13, 2008
MySpace is the #1 site among all social networks! MySpace is getting a lot of flack, and yet according to Hitwise, the site still attracts close to 70% of all social networkers last month. In fact,Myspace made up for 73.8% of all social network visits.

Social networking sites continue to attract visitors who want to communicate with friends and the amount of content and applications make visitors stay for a longer period of time making consumers spend longer amounts of time online. Myspace visitors spend on average at least 30 minutes online, facebook visitors do the same.

This tells advertisers that advertising on social network sites is not the wrong idea, but that they need to find new ways of reaching users. While users spend more time on MySpace and other social network sites, advertisers are scrambling with finding new ways to reach users, and convert that time to money.

How do Students Who Use Social Networking Sites Fare in University?
By Felix 07:34 pm EDT, Mon May 12, 2008
Recent University research and studies at the University of Leicester are trying to use students that are members of MySpace and Facebook to help them with a research project they are currently undergoing. They know that almost 10,000 students and staff have MySpace and Facebook profiles, and that over 90% of teens between the ages of 16 and 18 plan to go to university and use social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace.

The university now wants to know how social networking sites like myspace affect students, and if it helps them become accustomed to university life or not. They believe that universities need to tink about how this technology enhances a students integration into college life or not.

A students withdrawal from university is based a lot on his ability to socialy integrate into university life. Up until now, Universities have based all their investigation on academics and little research has gone into the social aspects of university life.

In today’s world students are so used to using social networking sites that a university in the United States has started giving seminars to explain to students how important it is to build actual face to face networks.
The project at the University of Leicester is also using resources of internationally recognized experts in online research methods to investigate the affect of social networking sites on new and ongoing university students.

  RockYou Brings Advertisers to Users
By Jenny 07:06 pm EDT, Mon May 12, 2008
RockYou the company that made the first slide show widget for MySpace has grown tremendously in the two years it has existed. The company has since helped advertisers and brands reach their targeted audiences. As more young people shift away from television and toward online social networking, marketers are becoming more and more challenged. Making these young people familiar with certain brands, and creating loyalty is becoming truly difficult for younger people. On social networks these people are enganged but they don’t spend much of their attention on ads, and when their attention is gained, it better be gotten quickly.

This is probably why RockYou has become so popular, they are great at capturing viewers attention and they are full of energy. This company has become extremely popular and lets users promote their applications virally. Friends promote the applications to other friends. RockYou now reaches millions of users around the world and is fast becoming a leader and a method of getting the message to the consumer by marketers.

RockYou is the best provider of widgets and applications on the web today. They offer specialized branding and advertising on MySpace, Facebook, and Bebo, and any other social networkout there. Theirs is the larges advertising platform and the best way for advertisers to reach their consumers.

Revenue Comes From Several Sources on MySpace
By Tom 06:37 pm EDT, Mon May 12, 2008
Much has been said about $15 billion valuation, but unfortunately as much valuation as we have had in social networks, there still isn’t a clear sign as to when profits will actually appear. Most social networks believe that ad dollars will soon bring in the revenue but experts also say that you cant experience a 15 billion valuation with just advertising.

Some social networks suggest that they also make revenue from from other places like premium subscriptions, which myspace is considering, or certain licensing agreements. Myspace and Facebook are expanding their membership base by letting users take their profile information to other sites., so this new data portability is a part of a large growth strategy by Myspace.

MySpace has also found another source for their revenue and that is their HyperTargeting program which came out last summer. They also believe revenue will come from deals them make with large record labels, on items like ringtones, merchandise, and concert tickets.

  Plans for MySpace India
By Tom 10:01 pm EDT, Sun May 11, 2008
News Corp bought Myspace with the intentions of making it an advertising great, and now MylSpace is in South Korea and India. There are music downloads and specific programs to help the users have a better experience.
For instance, the Indian Myspace intends to come out ahead in the Indian market and create new revenues. Still it is not expected for the site to make much money for another 5 to 6 years, but Myspace is beefing up their sales team, and working to make music right for the Indian population. They plan on making a better open platform and offering streaming music of both international and local Indian bands.

They are making the site more national . Myspace india has already joined with STAR TV and created Campus Star , the television programme that is currently showing on Channel V. There are several exclusive albums made with thirty different bands from three major cities.
There will be international quality concewrts in Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Karachi and the Northeast.

Currently there will not be a mobile version out. It really depends on how well the MySpace India site does in the next 12 months. There is still a lot that needs to be done to the mobile version.

  Song Plays and MySpace
By Felix 09:58 pm EDT, Sun May 11, 2008
Myspace is one of the best and most powerful social network sites today. There are hundreds of millions of members and even today there are over 200,000 registrations. But those millions of users means there is lots of competition and it can be really hard to get famous unless you really do a lot of marketing. On of these great marketing strategies is the subscribing to Increase Song Plays. This company offers mixed plans which will increase your song plays in MySpace and so increase your MySpace profile views.

The logic that Song plays uses is simple, Song plays offers your tracks and will give you many profile views, and the more popular you seem the more others will want to become your friend. After all people like to go where other people go. Increase song plays is a great addition to your Myspace marketing endeavors, if you are in the music world.

Anheuser Busch Helps Parents Reach Children
By Felix 04:26 pm EDT, Sun May 11, 2008
Up until now most parents have not had any instructions on how to raise their kids. But there is a new online resource that all parents can use. Anheuser Bush and the National Fatherhood Initiative have joined forces and launched a new web forum which helps parents share positive parenting practices on MySpace. The site is www.myspace.com/positiveparenting.

On this forum parents will get to submit their best practices and for the first 1,000 posts Anheuser Busch will donate $10 per submission to the NFI, giving a total of $10,000 dollars.

This is a great time to start such a forum, especially because prom season is coming up, and teens are faced with drinking pressure. This forum will help parents better understand their role in preventing underage drinking and realizing that they are not alone in their frustrations. This forum will be supported with banner ads on Myspace that will direct people to the page.

  NHL and MySpace
By Jenny 04:43 pm EDT, Sat May 10, 2008
There seem to be many freedom of expression issues in many different organizations. Lets take as an ample the issue of Riley Cotes MySpace page. Riley Cote plays for the NHL and is one of the players that has profile on MySpace and Facebook. He even has his own Website.
Cotes MySpace page became a big issue for the NHL when it was known that Cote has as a myspace friend, Sean Wolfe, and Sean is a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang. His page also sported a banner for the Winnipeg Chapter of Hells angels. It does need to be mentioned that the banner was taken off by friday afternoon.
Cote has only dressed for three of the Flyers post season games. He is definitly not happy that the issue arose durig the middle of the playoffs but feels it is his right to post whatever he wants on the internet. This should not be an issue for the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Wolfe is Cotes cousin. He is family and there is nothing that can be done about that. I dont have anything to do with the Hells Angels, he does.

The NHL says that it doesnt have any particular policy regarding the internet. There was another previous embarassing situation where a rookie sent a nude photo of himself to a friend and the picture wound up on several web sites. "we only expect our players to be good citizens." said NHL spokesman Frank Brown.

There are more than 700 players in the NHL and it is becoming common for players, especially the most popular ones, to have their own web sites. Many more have MySpace and Facebook pages, although it is not known how many.

  The MySpace Teen
By Tom 04:42 pm EDT, Sat May 10, 2008
Todays teenagers have to be a lot more adult and seem to be much more materialistic than those teens that preceeded them. A recent survey shows that many students hope to buy their home by the time they are 24. One teen was even reported to have3 said; "its hard because I dont even have a job, but Im trying to save up money to buy a house. I am worried about interest rates.

Other teens seem to spend a lot of time on MySpace, Teens believe that it is not cool to do drugs, but its just great to go out and drink. Most like technology, saying its easier to express themselves by typing and its not so easy when you are talking. After all you can backspace when you are typing and you cant backspace when you are talking.

Wit the advent of technology Teens feel extremely pressured to succeed at much younger ages than ever before. Although this could be good, it could also be bad for teens, because an excessive amount of stress causes tension and the diseases that come with it.
