Ska was the precursor to later day reggae and rocksteady. This music genre evolved in the Caribbean island of Jamaica in the 1950s before spreading to other parts of the world. Ska combines certain elements of calypso, for which the Caribbean islands are famous for along with rhythm and blues, with a bit of American Jazz thrown in for good measure. Ska became extremely popular in the Caribbean islands during the 1960s. As it spread to other parts of the world, there were many modifications that took place in this music genre. ‘Ska punk’ came into existence in the 1980s and continues to have a steady fan following to this day.
