The military warriors of pre-industrial Japan were known as Samurai. They typically employed a wide range of weapons including, spears, guns, bows and arrows and most importantly the sword. Most of us would have heard of the famous samurai sword. These warriors were supposed to lead a life of strict discipline according to certain codes of conduct listed in the ‘Bushido’, which means ‘ways of the warrior’. Various important religious philosophies including Confucianism, Shinto, Zen and Buddhism have had their influence on the samurai culture. Among them Zen mediation became an important aspect for a samurai warrior since it taught them the process to keep a calm mind at all times.
