The word ‘collage’ is derived from the French word ‘coller’, which means ‘to glue’. A collage as the meaning suggests is a work of art made from the combination of different art forms. This form of rather unique art work made its appearance as oil paintings initially. These paintings went to catch the attention of people in the early part of the 20th century. A collage could consist of literally any sort of bizarre combination. For instance a collage can be created using ribbons, some photographs, newspaper clippings and colored paper which can be glued to a canvas. Historical references point out to techniques similar to that of modern day collage being applied in ancient China and Japan, which were popular in those times.
